Introduction to Business – Introduction to the many facets of the private enterprise system and the business that operate within it. Exploration of the business arena and the professions and functions needed within any business enterprise.

 

Interviewing – Teaches the principles of interviewing both from the interviewer and interviewee perspectives, including how to structure an interview and question development.

 

Effective Learning – This course is designed to prepare students for success in college through training in effective time management, study strategies, communication, teamwork skills.

 

Principles of Management – Teaching Assistant – Course is designed to provide a broad overview of the functions and applications of management in contemporary organizations.

Institutional Achievements

  • Between 2004 – 2012, FGCU ranked #1 every year in the Florida State University System (SUS) for percentage of graduates employed in Florida and/or continuing education

  • For 2012-13 graduates, percentage of graduates employed/continuing education increased by 2% points and median average of full-times wages increased 7%

  • Since its inception in 1997, FGCU has maintained the lowest annual total expenditure per student per credit hour ($291) among the eleven SUS institutions

  • In 2015, FGCU placed fourth among all 11 state universities on performance based funding metrics

 

Administration and Supervision

  • Effectively develop and lead a growing team of professional staff, graduate assistants, and student workers to meet departmental and University-wide goals.

  • Manage all aspects of the staffing process including hiring, training, supervising and evaluating personnel.

  • Oversee, maintain and implement the fiscal budget for the department. Through the implementation of revenue generating events and employer sponsorships, department has become less reliant on student and institutional funding for operational expenses.

  • Establish and implement strategic goals and objectives in support of the department's mission and vision and consistent with University strategic goals.

  • Experience in designing surveys, conducting data collections, and creating outcomes based assessments to measure performance of services.

  • Developed all departmental policies and procedures to meet daily operational needs of the center.

  • As a direct report to the Vice President of Student Affairs, serve on The Vice President’s Council, which provides feedback to the VP on divisional and institutional matters.

  • Successfully utilized expertise in TQM and continuous improvement to achieve high levels of professionalism, customer service and efficiency within the department.

  • Worked closely with FGCU facilities planning department and architects to design the current Career Services facility.

  • Oversee design and production of all marketing materials

 

Collaboration and Outreach

  • Successfully cultivated relationships throughout the University community to raise the visibility of the office, market our services, and collaborate on programming.

  • Developed relationships with faculty from all five colleges to deliver discipline-specific training to their students

  • Conducted extensive outreach to the employer community resulting in over 5,000 employers registered in our employer database.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for local media on topics related to the job market, graduate employment rates, and generational issues.

  • Coordinated the career exploration component of over 50 Styles and Ways of Learning classes each year, educating freshman students on the career decision-making process.

  • Serve as a professional resource to career center directors from Ave Maria University, Edison State College, and New College of Florida.

  • Represent the University at community functions and serve on numerous speakers bureaus.

  • Assisted with the planning and execution of the Southwest Florida Career Advancement Expo, a regional, collaborative event focused on bringing together employers with high-wage, high-skills opportunities and the regional workforce.

 

Program Management and Service Delivery

  • Completed NACE Career Services External Review Training, providing a thorough understanding of best practices in all aspects of career center operations and policies. Continually conduct research on best practices in career services, and identify educational and employment trends to meet the changing needs of employers, students and alumni.

  • Maintain a daily schedule of student advising appointments on career choice, selection of major, resume writing, cover letter, interview skills, internship and job strategies, graduate school and other career development areas.

  • Conduct over 50 career coaching workshops and class presentations annually

  • Designed and wrote all content for the department website. Added a variety of resources and capabilities to the department website, as well as enhanced navigability and functionality, resulting in increasing usage numbers.

  • In partnership with department event planner, responsible for the planning and execution of all career events, as well as involvement in collaborative community events serving key educational, business, and community stakeholders.

BARNES & NOBLE, INC., Naples, Florida                                                                                                          1997 – 2000

General Manager

Selected accomplishments

  • Recognized as one of only 10% of the 480 Store Managers nationwide to consistently achieve or exceed annual company performance goals, including employee productivity, sales, and customer satisfaction. Achieved this at a store considered one of the most complex operations in the company due to the seasonal sales cycles, tight labor market, limited sales space, and $1 million Café sales.

  • Effectively oversee an operating budget consisting of over $1 million in payroll, $3 million in total controllable expenses, and $10 million in annual sales.

  • Implemented an orientation program for new employees, which resulted in increased performance and employee satisfaction, and reduced turnover by 15%.

  • As the primary hiring authority for the store, screened, interviewed, and selected over 100 employees, as well as created an effective succession-planning program aimed at identifying and developing qualified candidates for promotion.  Within one year, successfully promoted six internal candidates to new positions.

Selected accomplishments

  • Successfully transformed the Recreation Department from a financial liability into the first profitable recreation center in The Ritz-Carlton chain, setting the benchmark for Ritz-Carlton recreation operations worldwide. 

  • Received the Company’s Five Star Award for outstanding performance and achievement.

  • Selected from a worldwide pool of the hotel’s top managers to be a member of the Opening Team for The Ritz-Carlton in Korea, St. Thomas, and Cancun.  Developed and delivered a comprehensive orientation program designed to educate and motivate the resident staff on the Ritz-Carlton service philosophy and standards.

  • As a certified Total Quality Management Coach, was selected to assist the Hotel Executive Committee prepare for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Inspection (1992), resulting in the hotel company becoming the first hotel chain ever to receive the award.
